Chapter Fourteen

Romy von Krummacher

Eden

Fuck.

I don’t remember how I came to be out of Luke’s bed and speed-dressing. All I knew was that I was suddenly in the middle of the carpeted floor, hooking my bra in place with my skirt half-on and wondering where the hell my thong was.

Fuck.

How was it possible to be in heaven one second, and hell the next?

But I knew. Of course I knew.

Blasts from the past were never just a blast. They could be life-ending explosions.

At least, that’s how my personal blasts from the past were.

“I don’t believe you lied to me, Eden.” Naked, perfect and obviously capable of annihilating my carefully constructed world with a handful of words, my personal monster Luke slid to the edge of the bed where he sat with a casual air, like he was watching a ballgame instead of my life blasting apart at the seams. “I believe you meant it when you told me you trusted me. I saw it in your eyes. I felt it when you caressed my cheek.”

“That was before.” Seriously, where the hell was my thong?

“Before what?”

“Before you started interrogating me while having sex.” Screw it. Who needed a thong? Not this girl.

“It’s not possible to interrogate someone during the kind of sex we have, and a simple question is hardly an interrogation.”

“Simple?” Halfway through buttoning up my blouse I whirled on him, so enraged at his arrogant belief that his intrusion into my life was something he was entitled to do, I could almost—almost—overlook the devastation of having our private little heaven shattered. “How dare you sit there and insult my intelligence to my face. You knew very well that bringing up that name in any form is far from simple. Do not insult me again, or I swear with everything I hold dear, they will be the last words you ever speak to me.”

Those monster-eyes were back, watching me as if he could see my thoughts before he nodded once. “Okay, me trying to minimize what’s clearly a sore subject to you shouldn’t be labeled simple. I should’ve known that. I know it now, I got the message loud and clear, so it’s not going to happen again.”

“Good.”

“So now that I’ve acknowledged this subject is anything but simple, why don’t you tell me what it is about Romy von Krummacher that makes you so panicked you put your skirt on inside out?”

I looked down. Sure enough, there it was, inside out.

Great. Just fucking great.

“Are you interested in listening to what I know about Romy?”

“No.” My hands were shaking so much I barely managed putting my blouse on. The pearly round buttons were probably going to be beyond me.

“The von Krummacher family is—or at least it was—the financial force in the small town of Gobbler Gulch, Kentucky,” he went on as if I hadn’t spoken. “From a few decades before the Civil War to about thirty or so years ago, the von Krummachers were the main employers of that entire region, thanks to their logging and paper mill industries.
